Therapeutic Riding
What is Therapeutic Riding?
Therapeutic riding is intensive therapy disguised as play and adaptive riding for clients with specific needs ranging from Autism to Paralysis and many needs in-between. Classes are led by a trained instructor, and supported by volunteers responsible for leading the horse and providing side-walking support for the client when needed. Our clients see improvements in speech, social interaction skills, strength, balance, mobility, independence, confidence, joy and more.
Therapeutic Riding for individuals with special needs can bring a sense of courage, belonging, and accomplishment as riders achieve physical and mental improvements. From the beginning, riders learn balance, coordination, and self-assurance as they receive therapeutic muscle stimulation. As a result of carefully planned lessons, posture, strength, and flexibility improve. Advanced equestrian skills, teamwork, and cooperation are learned as the rider becomes more independent on horseback. Classes and special events encourage confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of accomplishment as new levels of expertise and goals are met.
What does therapeutic riding look like?
Clients come for a 30, 45, or 60 minute group or private class in the saddle! Classes are facilitated by a trained instructor, and our volunteers give side-walking support as needed.
